Do carrots support your eye sight?

Most of us have heard the advice at some point: “Eat your carrots if you want good eyesight.” While there is some truth behind this long-standing belief, the reality is a little more complicated.

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a pigment that the body converts into vitamin A. This vitamin plays an important role in maintaining healthy vision, particularly in low-light conditions. In fact, a severe vitamin A deficiency can lead to night blindness and other serious eye problems.

However, for most people in the UK who eat a balanced diet, vitamin A deficiency is uncommon. This means that eating extra carrots is unlikely to improve your eyesight or prevent the need for glasses. If you are short-sighted, long-sighted, or have astigmatism, no amount of carrots can alter the shape of your eye or correct your prescription.

Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins C and E also contribute to the long-term health of the eyes.

Lifestyle choices matter just as much as diet. Protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation with quality sunglasses, avoiding smoking, managing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and maintaining a healthy weight can all help reduce the risk of sight-threatening eye disease later in life.

Regular eye examinations are another essential part of protecting your vision. Many common eye conditions, including glaucoma and macular degeneration, can develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages. Comprehensive eye examinations allow optometrists to detect subtle changes before they begin to affect your sight.

So, will eating carrots help maintain healthy vision? Yes, as part of a balanced and varied diet. But there is no single “superfood” for eye health. The best approach is a combination of good nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, appropriate UV protection, and regular eye examinations. Together, these measures give your eyes the best possible chance of remaining healthy for years to come.
